Hypnosis is a normal, natural and pleasant state of the mind that we have all experienced at various times. It involves focused attention; concentration on an object, an idea or activity with full involvement, while attention to anything else is temporarily suspended. At night when we fall asleep we all pass through a point when entering sleep called the Hypnoidal Point; An alternate state of awareness, when one is half awake and half asleep, relaxed and comfortable, safe and secure, aware yet not bothered. We can experience this "trance like" state in our everyday lives, for example; becoming totally involved watching a movie or a sports game, driving on a familiar route where you do not quite remember part of the journey, daydreaming, reading an absorbing book, hypnosis is a relaxed state of mind where one can indeed focus on an idea, an aspect of one's life, a dilemma or a challenge. It is used by sports people and corporate management for motivation, in advertising to attract you to certain ideas, by public speakers and politicians to captivate their audiences and by many therapists to effectively change or improve many aspects of people's lives.
Sensations of hypnosis vary from client to client. It is usual to experience mild drowsiness together with pleasant feelings of comfort and well-being. They are, in fact, totally relaxed. People in hypnosis are conscious and able to hear the Hypnotherapist's voice, remaining at all times in control. They will not do or say anything that they would not elect to do of their own choice.
Simply put, it is therapy under hypnosis. During hypnosis, the body and conscious mind are in a relaxed, natural state, while the subconscious mind remains awake and receptive to suggestion. Hypnotic suggestions bypass the intellectual mind, called the conscious and zero in on the subconscious. When given a new suggestion that is within the bounds of a person's belief system and moral orientation, the subconscious mind accepts it literally as a new reality. The ability to reprogram emotional attitudes and reactions is a latent talent within every human being. Hypnotherapy is the most functional and reasonable way to build new behaviours, create new patterns and find alternate ways of dealing with situations, thereby enforcing positive change and restoring well being of mind and body.
Hypnotherapy has been a great help in overcoming many problems some of which include smoking, over-eating, nail biting, bed wetting, insomnia, tension headaches and migraine, self confidence, study, memory recall, exam nerves, pain control, anxieties, phobias, depression, mood swings, emotional problems, relationship problems. There is no single form of treatment, which can be used successfully in all conditions, and hypnotherapy is no exception to the rule, but it can be applied with success to a wide variety of problems.
In the hands of a trained professional, it is a natural and beneficial experience that is free from drugs and is totally safe. People can end the experience at any time they choose if they feel the need, the hypnotic state can only be maintained by mutual co-operation between the client and the therapist. You cannot be hypnotised against your will.
Virtually anyone can be hypnotised - some more easily than others. Improvement comes with practice and someone who starts slowly can often become a better subject than a fast starter.
